But what happens when that effort doesn\u2019t translate into fair compensation?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1333\">People who work in essential services \u2014 like public sanitation, early education, or public healthcare \u2014 are often underpaid, while celebrities, influencers, and executives can earn a fortune with a single campaign, contract, or deal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1335\" data-end=\"1625\">This isn\u2019t about comparing journeys \u2014 it\u2019s about questioning criteria.<br data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1408\" \/>Should the value of work be tied to its social impact or the profit it generates? To working hours or to the status it holds? To the scarcity of professionals or to the privileges involved in entering a certain field?<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1630\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1691\"><strong data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1691\">Supply, demand, and the invisible game behind wages<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"1831\">Behind what we earn lies a game of invisible forces. The market dictates more than we\u2019d like to admit, and two of its biggest players are:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1981\">\n<li data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1909\">\n<p data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1909\"><strong data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1846\">Supply:<\/strong> How many people are willing (and qualified) to do what you do?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1910\" data-end=\"1981\">\n<p data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"1981\"><strong data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"1923\">Demand:<\/strong> How many companies, brands, or clients need this service?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2196\">When supply is high and demand is low, prices \u2014 or in this case, wages \u2014 tend to drop. The opposite is also true. That\u2019s how, for instance, software developers often earn much more than elementary school teachers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2438\">Both are essential. But one is scarce in the market, while the other, unfortunately, is not treated as a priority.<br data-start=\"2312\" data-end=\"2315\" \/>This logic may sound cold \u2014 and it is. It <strong data-start=\"2357\" data-end=\"2438\">reduces people to numbers, talent to statistics, and purpose to spreadsheets.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2440\" data-end=\"2443\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2445\" data-end=\"2517\"><strong data-start=\"2449\" data-end=\"2517\">\u201cIf it were easy, everyone would do it\u201d: the myth of meritocracy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2519\" data-end=\"2719\">It\u2019s common to hear that those who earn more do so because they studied harder or worked harder. And yes, there\u2019s real merit in dedication. But that view ignores the uneven starting points in society.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"2917\">While some people have access to quality education, nutritious food, a stable environment, and emotional support, others face adversity from childhood \u2014 often working early to help their families.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2919\" data-end=\"3073\">Certain careers are encouraged in some circles and nearly invisible in others. The result? A world where <strong data-start=\"3024\" data-end=\"3073\">talent doesn\u2019t always get a chance to thrive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3075\" data-end=\"3207\">Meritocracy, when detached from social reality, becomes a comfortable excuse to justify privilege \u2014 <strong data-start=\"3175\" data-end=\"3207\">not a fair measure of value.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3209\" data-end=\"3212\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3214\" data-end=\"3279\"><strong data-start=\"3218\" data-end=\"3279\">Symbolic value: what does your profession mean to others?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3281\" data-end=\"3472\">There\u2019s also the question of symbolism. Some professions carry status, prestige, or glamour. Especially in a world where everything has a price, including time, mental health, and quality of life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4744\" data-end=\"4933\">It\u2019s possible (and fair) to want to do what you love <strong data-start=\"4797\" data-end=\"4804\">and<\/strong> get paid well for it.<br data-start=\"4826\" data-end=\"4829\" \/>And the opposite is also true: you don\u2019t have to love your job to deserve respect and fair compensation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4935\" data-end=\"5007\"><strong data-start=\"4935\" data-end=\"5007\">Valuing others\u2019 work is also a way to recognize our shared humanity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5009\" data-end=\"5012\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5014\" data-end=\"5061\"><strong data-start=\"5018\" data-end=\"5061\">What if <em data-start=\"5028\" data-end=\"5033\">you<\/em> could set your own worth?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5063\" data-end=\"5278\">Imagine, just for a moment, that you could define your hourly rate. How much would an hour of your time be worth?
